The star has donated the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the Britain's small concert spaces.

The star was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support thirty-eight local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and sound issues.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from performances in large arenas helps the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his honor winnings to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp won the prize in the mid-90s for their release their work, frontman Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, artist Ms Dynamite split her bounty between multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the youth organization that supported their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also the 1994 recipients the group contributed their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," said singer Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."

Recently, the MVT announced it had saved a couple of local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in the city and The Croft in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by a national body and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
